  • Boudoir photography is for every body. No matter who you are, you are beautiful, and there is no better way to capture the essence of your beauty than through specialized portraits in this realm. With that said, though, it's important to also recognize that every person is different. There are many different styles of boudoir photography with subtle differences among them, and which you and your photographer choose depends on what is best for your personality, needs, desires, and specific situation. Photography is a form of expression for both the person captured in the image and the person taking the picture. It is through the focus on different styles of portraiture that both the personality of the subject and of the photographer can shine. Photographic style can express a mood, an emotion, or a time and place; two photos taken with different stylistic intentions in mind can express two entirely different ideas. Read on to learn about the different styles of boudoir photography. It's likely that one or two will resonate with you more than the others. When you meet with a photographer, knowing the potential of different styles can help you to better communicate your expectations and goals for your photo session. What is Boudoir Photography? Boudoir photography has been in existence since the 1920s, but it has greatly grown in popularity over the past few decades. The term boudoir is an old French term that refers to a place in a home in which a woman could be alone. Due to the private nature of these spaces, they were somewhat shrouded in mystery. Boudoir photography emerged as a response to that mystery and gave men a chance to take a peek into the secret lives of women from a safe distance. This concept was nothing new even when it began. For centuries artists enjoyed drawing and painting sensual, intimate portraits of women. As technology developed and photography became an art of its own, it was no surprise that the beauty of women would also be captured on film. Today, women seek out boudoir photographers for a variety of reasons. Some participate in boudoir photoshoots to create a gift for a partner, but others just enjoy the experience and the feelings of empowerment, confidence, and strength it provides. Styles of Boudoir Photography If you are looking for some great boudoir photography ideas for your own upcoming photoshoot, or if you just want to learn about the options available to you, learning about the different styles is a great place to start. The differences between the styles of boudoir photography may seem small or negligible at first. However, despite their differences being subtle, the chosen style can influence the end result immensely. Traditional You may already be familiar with traditional boudoir photography without even knowing it. Images taken in this style involve the subject posed in suggestive, sensual poses, but would not be classified as erotic. In most cases, traditional boudoir photos are taken in a bedroom setting with soft lighting. The subject may be dressed in lingerie or may be nude. Glamour/Elegant Glamour or elegant boudoir photoshoots are a bit more like a modeling shoot. Glamour and elegant boudoir photography aims to highlight the subject's best features while also expressing her personality or a specific mood or idea. These types of shoots usually include a stronger focus on the subject's clothing, poses, make-up and hair. The photographer may also use brighter or more natural lighting as well. Dramatic If you fancy yourself to be a bit of an actress, a dramatic boudoir photoshoot may be right for you. In a dramatic shoot, your photographer will also serve as a director as you express yourself through your poses and expressions. A shoot of this type can express any idea or feeling that you wish. A dramatic boudoir photo shoot can take place anywhere. It simply depends on what message you aim to express. Playful Playful boudoir photoshoots result in photos that make great gifts for a partner. The resulting photos can demonstrate a fun and flirty side while really capturing one's individualism and personality. While most boudoir photography styles are rather serious, a playful photoshoot allows the subject to be silly, to laugh, and to smile a lot. Fine Art Fine art boudoir photography is inspiring. Photos taken in this style are unique works of art. The dedicated focus of the use of light, color, focus, and angles creates images that truly celebrate the female form. If you are looking for a boudoir photo that could just as easily hang in a museum, then the fine art style will be perfect for you. Prepare for Your Session When you contact a photographer to set up a boudoir photography session, you will have the opportunity to speak to him or her beforehand to discuss your intentions and goals for your photoshoot. The more you express to your photographer about what you seek, the better the results will be. Looking at boudoir photos online will help you to further consider your options before the big day. Taking the time to image search different boudoir photography styles can help you to hone down the best options for you. Everyone is a bit nervous before participating in a boudoir photo shoot, but don't worry. Your photographer is very experienced and will do everything that he or she can to make you feel comfortable and at ease. Happy Posing When all is said and done, you will be thrilled with the photographic results of your boudoir photo shoot. Everyone should give boudoir photography a try. The photographs capture a beautiful subject at a moment in time and they are something that you will treasure always. You will also love the confidence that it brings and the fun time you have during the actual experience. Since there are several different styles of boudoir photography, why not try several? You will find that photos taken in each style are vastly different from one another, so you may want to try more than one session. I’ve always loved how transformative Sports Illustrated Swimsuit addition magazine can be. These photoshoots cast a spell on the imagination, the iconic images commonly exhibited stirring tropical backdrops, all so vivid and gorgeous.  I often felt like I was being transported to an oasis in some remote part of the planet.  I could almost feel the cool ocean breeze, and smell the freshness of the beach air. The magnificence of the outdoor setting was only matched by the jaw dropping beauty of the diverse models gracing the pages, usually wearing little more than a skimpy bikini or a small accessory.

It is my belief that every woman should have the opportunity to feel like a Sports Illustrated model, even if it’s just for one day. This is why we have designed our backyard home studio to replicate a lush tropical landscape, but with the privacy, safety, and comfort of an indoor setting. The backyard studio features a stunning turquoise pool with a beach entry, grotto, and waterfall designed specifically for outdoor boudoir shoots.

Our home studio is conveniently located in Thousand Oaks, California. We shoot the outdoor sessions after your two-hour indoor session is over. The wet-look will take your outdoor boudoir photos to the next level, producing images so ravishing you may not believe what you are seeing. But don’t worry, we always ensure that the water does not destroy or diminish your otherwise professionally applied makeup. The outdoor boudoir shots, including the breathtaking water scenes, come at an additional fee. However, we are confident some of your most treasured photos that you end up choosing will come from these  outdoor boudoir pictures.

No proper outdoor boudoir photo session would be complete without the perfect garments, specially selected to compliment your body and bring these images to life. We offer a wide array of designer swimwear, tanks, and accessories.  During the duration of the outdoor shooting session, we carefully guide your poses based specifically on the unique shape of your body.

The promise of your own rousing magazine cover photo is no longer just a fantasy. Caroline Malouf Photography is dedicated to making awe-inspiring outdoor boudoir photos accessible to all women.
